Ten reasons why kids must explore adventure sports

Adventure sports are physical activity full of excitement, thrill and entertainment although involving lots of physical risks. As a toddler, a child uses motor skills to jump, run and hop. Parents encourage him/her to explore the outdoors-the playground. In preteens, these activities are replaced by sports like cycling, swimming, skating, hockey, football, cricket. These physical activities: strengthen muscles and bones, boost the immune system, improve overall health enhance school performance The purpose is learning and entertainment through fun but as a child grows up to adolescence, focus shifts to other things like studies or screen time. The daily physical activities reduce or become monotonous because there is no adventure associated with them. In teens, children are full of energy and enter a phase of self-discovery. They are ready to learn new things but search thrill and excitement in whatever they do. That is why this is the optimum phase to introduce them to ad...

Behavioural abnormality in kids

Behavioural abnormality in kids cannot be measured. In one of the colouring events, I accompanied my kids, I was mesmerised with the colourful imagination of people. One young girl was painting the complexities of the brain so minutely that my attention was completely drawn towards her painting. Suddenly something crossed my eyes. Before I could understand what interrupted my undiverted attention, one of the guardians started scolding a child while a woman was repeatedly sorry for the behaviour of her kid. Out of curiosity, I peeped into the conversation. A boy of 8 yrs threw a painting brush on a toddler which hit him on his forehead. Due to the intervention of other parents, the matter was wrapped up quickly and the event resumed its character. But the mother of the boy was so upset that she left the place with her child in haste. I was closely watching the behaviour of mother and boy. As the event progressed nobody cared about that soon forgotten incident but being a paren...

I love myself-self awareness

I love myself is a reflection of "I am self-aware and accept myself". I was in school when this word aroused curiosity in me. Initially, I was only fascinated by the charm which surrounds "self-awareness". I never realised how deep it could connect with self. It was only when I started writing ,  I introspected my thoughts and actions. My self-exploration, with time, became more profound.  I could actually evaluate whether my emotions were true or influenced by peer group. This consciousness helped me to rediscover my capabilities and be more responsive to events of life. What is self-awareness? It is listening to our self, self-questioning who we are, what we do, why we do? It is observing own thoughts, actions, behaviour and become conscious of what should we do? Steps to cultivate self-awareness Writing a diary:     Pen down your day to day actions, emotions, beliefs,thoughts-negative or positive, what we want in life, connect with yourse...

Digital kids

Every morning when my "digital kids" woke up, they insisted on watching "videos". This routine turned into a habit. Sometimes they used to  be so much engrossed in their newly discovered entertainment source that for the time being, they forgot what was happening around them. Initially, I participated in those moments of joy but gradually realised that they were getting addicted to not only videos but had started exploring more options in device with their little fingers. This alerted me of long term consequences and how that could lead to exposure to social media in an early age when they should be really spending their leisure time in various physical activities. I decided to limit the usage of digital media although not restricting them completely but how?😕 DIGITAL KIDS I talked to many parents about their experience on how to deal with this emerging trend of kids. Although the opinions varied some universal facts came to light like: It le...

Experiential learning in schools

Experiential Learning in schools is freehand learning experience through self doing and active participation. It involves learning through creative arts, music, organised games, playful methods, going to field trips etc. This kind of self-exploration is nothing but self-discovery and self-awareness for children.  The trial and error method develops logical thinking and aims at continuous improvement in eye-hand coordination and observation skills. The children are assigned such tasks in school which are outside traditional classroom settings.    Experiential learning in schools  The process  involves the following steps: Mentors asking kids how to do a particular task or how to improve upon the tasks already done. This wakes up the thought process of children. They build their own concepts and strategy and implement them to the task in hand. In such learning, the kids experience both success and failure alike because the challenges are immen...

How best playschools/preschools are second home to children?

Christmas is the festival of love and hope. As Christmas is approaching my two-year-old pre-schooler demanded “mamma Santa cap”. I hugged her and asked, "dear how do you know Santa". She put her little right hand on the mouth 😲 as if asking me "Don't you know Santa “I had no words but smiled and understood "it’s all playschool celebrations". Playschool learning What are playschools/preschools ? Playschools synonymously known as preschools are turning into a second home for toddlers. They are learning platforms for them outside the home and play a crucial role in bringing fore the hidden talents in little Santas.  What are the yardsticks for the best playschools for children? A good preschool is a pre-preparatory institution for formal schools which focuses on cultivating the best in the child.
